Frequently Asked Questions

What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a protocol and database system used to look up registration information for domain names and IP address blocks. When a domain is registered, the registrar records information about the owner, registration date, expiry date, and nameservers in a publicly queryable database. WHOIS lookups are commonly used to find out who owns a domain, when it was registered, when it expires, and which nameservers it uses.
Why is the domain owner's contact information hidden?
Most domain registrars offer WHOIS privacy protection (also called domain privacy or GDPR redaction) which replaces the registrant's personal contact details with either the registrar's contact information or a privacy service proxy. Since GDPR came into effect in 2018, many registrars now apply privacy protection by default for domains registered by individuals in the EU. Even with privacy enabled, law enforcement and accredited parties can still request the underlying data from the registrar.
Can I still find the domain owner if privacy protection is enabled?
With privacy protection in place you generally cannot identify the owner from a public WHOIS lookup alone. However, if you have a legitimate reason (such as a legal dispute or a trademark complaint), you can submit a formal request to the registrar who must comply under ICANN rules. Some domain owners also include contact information on their website, in their email headers, or on social media. Abuse reports can also be filed through the registrar's abuse contact shown in the WHOIS record.
What do the domain status codes in a WHOIS record mean?
Domain status codes indicate what operations are currently allowed on the domain. Common codes include: clientTransferProhibited (the registrar is preventing the domain from being transferred away), clientDeleteProhibited (deletion is locked), serverHold (the registry has suspended the domain, often due to legal or payment issues), and pendingDelete (the domain has been deleted and is in a grace period before being released for re-registration). Most active domains will show clientTransferProhibited as standard protection against unauthorised transfers.
